What is Komodo Dragon?
Komodo is a large reptile found on several islands in Indonesia, such as Komodo Island, Rinca, Flores, and Gili Motang. It is a carnivorous animal that primarily feeds on carrion but can also hunt live prey by stealthily approaching and launching sudden attacks.
The habitat of Komodo includes several Indonesian islands, and Komodo National Park was established in 1980 to protect their population. However, Komodo is classified as an endangered species due to threats like habitat loss, illegal hunting, and climate change.
Particularly, Komodo possesses unique behaviours, such as its ability to climb trees, and is locally referred to as “Ora,” meaning land crocodile.
Komodo Dragon Size
Discover the mesmerizing size of the Komodo dragon, the largest species of lizard in the world. On average, they measure 2-3 meters in length and can weigh up to 100 kg, with some individuals reaching up to 3.13 meters in length and 166 kg in weight.
Males are generally larger than females, with averaging 2.6-2.9 meters in length and 79-91 kg in weight, while females measure around 2.2-2.4 meters in length and weigh 29-34 kg.
The size of Komodo dragons can vary depending on environmental factors such as food availability and temperature, with those living on smaller islands tending to be smaller than those on larger islands.

Are Komodo Dragon Venomous?
Komodo dragons have venomous bites that can kill their prey by biting and letting them become weak and die before consuming them. In 2009, researchers discovered that the Komodo dragon’s bite contains venom that causes a drop in blood pressure and stops blood clotting in their prey.
This venom can leave the prey weak and dead within a few days to a week. However, there have been no reports of human deaths caused by Komodo dragon bites. Therefore, although Komodo dragons have venomous bites, they are not considered highly dangerous to humans.
If a human is bitten, the effects may include a significant drop in blood pressure and dilated blood vessels. The bite can also lead to infected wounds due to the bacteria in the Komodo dragon’s mouth, often from their saliva. Thus, it is essential to immediately clean the wound and seek medical attention if bitten by a Komodo dragon.
